Technology is an increasingly significant part of our society, which is why it is important that we learn the appliances and systems people rely on daily in order to create a more efficient, safer and healthier world.

We foster an appreciation for traditional techniques, while also exploring the frenetic world of emerging technologies. Here, you have opportunities to analyse problems and implement a range of digital and design solutions such as artificial intelligence engines, engineering robots, building sustainable furniture and improving the quality and accessibility of food.

10 Digital - Video Game Development

This subject is replacing subject name: Digital - 3D Game Design

  • Design and create your own 3D video game from scratch

What will I learn?

You will learn the full game development process, from planning and designing a game idea to building a finished 3D product. You will explore key concepts such as gameplay mechanics, level design, 3D modelling, and programming using industry-standard tools. 

What will I do?

 

You will develop your own game concept, create 3D assets, program gameplay features, and build interactive levels. Throughout the unit, you will test, refine, and improve your game to produce a completed playable experience.

10 Fibre Technology

  • Develop advanced sewing and garment construction skills

What will I learn?

You will learn advanced sewing and garment construction techniques, including how to confidently use a sewing machine and overlocker. You will develop skills in reading and following commercial patterns, fabric manipulation, textile decoration, and industry-standard finishing methods. You will also investigate sustainability in the fashion industry, including textile waste and the environmental impact of fast fashion. 

What will I do?

 

You will design and produce a range of clothing and textile items such as pyjamas, tops, shorts, and accessories. You will create personalised textile designs using fabric decoration techniques and complete a sustainability project where you design and produce your own upcycled garment.

10 Food - Café Style

You will prepare and cook a range of international dishes, research and present information about global staple foods, and complete a design project creating and evaluating your own international Food Truck concept.

10 Introduction to Building

What will I learn?

You will learn the basics of the building and construction industry, including how to safely use a range of carpentry hand tools. You will develop problem-solving, teamwork, and practical construction skills while gaining an understanding of how builders and carpenters work in real-world settings. 

What will I do?

 

You will complete hands-on projects including building a house wall frame and designing and constructing your own timber project using recycled materials. You will work both independently and in teams to bring your designs to life through practical building tasks.

10 Materials - Metal

  • Refine and advance your metal fabrication and engineering skills

You will further develop welding, cutting, shaping, and fabrication skills while improving the accuracy, strength, and finish of your work. What will I do?

 

You will design, plan, and manufacture more complex metal projects, working both independently and collaboratively. You will use advanced fabrication techniques, apply problem-solving skills, and evaluate and refine your completed work to achieve high-quality results.

10 Materials - Timber Design

  • Design and build a timber product for a real end-user
  • Develop advanced woodworking skills using multiple timber joints
  • Create a design folio to justify and communicate your solution

What will I learn?

You will learn how to investigate user needs and apply the design process to create a functional timber product. You will develop advanced woodworking skills, including constructing at least three different timber joints and safely using workshop tools and machinery. You will also learn how to produce technical drawings and compile a design folio to communicate and justify your ideas. 

What will I do?

 

You will research existing products, generate creative design ideas, and develop detailed technical drawings. You will manufacture a timber product that includes legs and multiple joints, focusing on accuracy, quality craftsmanship, and functionality. You will also evaluate how effectively your final product meets the needs of the end-user and project success criteria.

10 Systems - Intelligent Systems Design

  • Design and program an intelligent system using an Arduino microcontroller

What will I learn?

You will learn how electronic systems operate, including key concepts such as Ohm’s Law, circuits, and how different components like sensors, motors, and microcontrollers function together. You will develop skills in programming Arduino systems to respond to inputs and control outputs, while also gaining experience with CAD software and manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining. Throughout the project, you will explore how mechanical and electrical systems are integrated to create intelligent, real-world solutions. 

What will I do?

 

You will design and manufacture components such as housings, mounts, or mechanical parts using CAD, then produce them with tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. You will build and program an Arduino-based system—such as an automated watering system or smart door—using sensors and actuators, then test, troubleshoot, and refine your design. Through this process, you will prototype, evaluate performance, diagnose problems, and improve your system to create a functional and reliable engineered solution.

10 Systems - Remote Control Vehicle

You will also learn how to create prototypes, test, diagnose, and improve engineered systems. 

What will I do?

 

You will design and manufacture parts such as chassis, wheels, gearboxes, and circuit boards using CAD and 3D printing. You will build and program a remote-controlled vehicle using an Arduino or ESC receiver, then test and refine its performance through troubleshooting and system optimisation.
